How to Pronounce Qatar
I'm sure this burning question is on the minds of everyone out there. Random choice of pronunciation of foreign words by the media is a pet peeve of mine, so I was very pleased when Slate dedicated an entire article on how to pronounce Qatar. It's a lot more complicated than you would think, but basically, you have to make a sound Americans really can't produce, but try for something in between "cutter" and "gutter" and you'll be in the ballpark. You can hear it on Merriam Webster online and try it yourself. It's sure to make you a hit at parties!
