I Love the 80s
So I finally checked out
I Love the 80s on VH1, and I'm hooked. If you're a gen X-er and haven't checked out this show yet, you are really missing something. The highlights of 1987: Converse all-stars, acid washed jeans, Glenn Close scares the bejesus out of anyone
thinking about having an affair, and my all time favorite line from 1987, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner." If you have no idea what I'm talking about, you are either over 35 or born in the 80s.
Belated Spike Lee Rant
I know I should have posted this weeks ago, but
Spike Lee needs to get over himself.
Positive Post
In the interest of proving that I don't actually hate everything, despite what you might think by reading the last few weeks, er months, worth of posts, I thought that I should mention that
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is really, really good. Without giving anything away to those who have yet to read it, I would say that it is the
Empire Strikes Back of the series, although year 6 could be darker and more angst-ridden and I could be proven completely wrong. (Of course I actually prefer Jedi to Empire, but that's an argument for another day...)
Ridiculous Lawsuit of the Day
The author of a book named
Escape From Cold Ditch is just now getting around to
suing Steven Spielberg, among others, claiming that
Chicken Run plagiarized his story line. Chicken Run was released three years ago, and this guy has
just now realized that they stole his story? Sorry, buddy. Not buying it.
Most Obvious Study Ever
You just can't beat a Reuters headline like
Study: Sugary Drinks Help Children Get Fat. Did we really need a study to tell us this? How many thousands of my tax dollars went towards this brilliant scientific revelation? They also discovered, shockingly, that " children tended to pass up milk when they were offered a sweet drink." The next study will attempt to prove that dinosaurs where, in fact, very large.
Shocking, shocking, news!
Mike Tyson
has been arrested yet again, this time for (gasp!) engaging in a brawl outside a Brooklyn hotel. I've seen guys strung out on crack who have better impulse control than this lunatic. I'm sure his scary
face tattoo will be very popular in the
the Tombs.
McGriddles
I'm ashamed to admit it, with all of my mocking of McDonalds, but I tried a
McGriddle this morning, and, well, it was disgustingly delicious. I opted for the sausage, egg and cheese, which seemed like it would go best with the syrup-infused mini-pancakes. I was right. Yummy, yummy, yummy. (By the way, the new salads are also good, but in the same artery clogging way.)
Hollywood Homicide
In a few days
Hollywood Homicide opens, and I am, to say the least, wary. I have loved
Harrison Ford since I was six years old, and it pains me to say this, but lately his movies really suck. I'm sorry, Harrison, but
Random Hearts? Just awful. How in the world did they find a woman who has no chemistry with Harrison Ford? What is she, dead? The last truly entertaining movie he starred in was
Air Force One which was
six years ago! The
Indy 4 rumors give me some hope, but while Spielberg is on a roll, Lucas is not. (Oh, and don't even get me started about Atticus Finch beating out Indiana Jones atop the
AFI's heroes list. Although "Man," the unseen killer of Bambi's mother, and terror of the forest, coming in at #20 on the villians list was priceless. Stupid deer still makes me cry...)
Driving Tip of the Day
Always wear your seatbelt, so when you
swerve like a maniac to avoid a squirrel, and roll your SUV four times, you aren't ejected out of the vehicle and almost killed. (By the way, the squirrel didn't make it either.)
Really Short DVD Reviews
I finally caught a couple of last year's movies on DVD,
Catch Me If You Can and
Star Trek Nemesis. Catch Me If You Can was very entertaining, but has nothing on the
book. I actually recommend you read the book, and then see the movie. It's amazing to watch how easily people are scammed by a uniform and a charming smile. Nemesis, on the other hand, well, it didn't exactly suck, but although Picard was as cool as ever, there was something missing in this tenth Trek adventure. Poor
Wil Wheaton got his part cut to about five seconds with no dialogue. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad. It was just OK.
Out of the Blue X-Files Rant
I was just watching one of my favorite X-Files episodes,
Bad Blood, which is a great he said/she said tale of a town full of vampires, and it only served to once again remind me what a great show the X-Files was before
jumping the shark.
"Well, it's obviously not a vampire." -- Scully
"Well, why not?" -- Mulder
"Because they don't exist. " -- Scully
I also discovered that
Luke Wilson of
The Royal Tenebaums played the cute sheriff. (At least in Scully's version, he was cute.) Once again proving that no one comes from nowhere. (Right, Jack?)
the daily .wav
One of my favorite sites,
the daily .wav almost shut down this week for lack of funding. Apparently they have gotten enough donations to keep going a few more months. I sent in a few bucks myself. It's the best sound site I've found on the web, and this was just a reminder that a lot of great sites are financed out of the webmaster's pockets, and need help. If everyone who visisted and downloaded a few sounds just donated a dollar, it would make a huge difference. With services like Paypal, it's very easy to do, and almost everyone can afford a buck.
